About the Event

Facilitating Student Learning Through the Library is designed for building and/or district administrators in order to increase awareness of the impact that an effective library program can have on the school's culture of learning.  Research has shown that administrators' training typically lacks information about the role of a school librarian as an instructional support for students, staff and administrators.  Course participants will:  (1) understand their role in creating a culture of learning through an effective school library program; (2) assess their current library program's progress towards meeting state standards; and (3) develop an action plan to impact student learning through the school library program.

In order to prepare for class discussion and building background knowledge, participants will read

"School Libraries Work!  A Compendium of Research Supporting the Effectiveness of School Libraries" by Scholastic (2016) before the first class meeting.  They will also be required to write a short reflection on the reading by summarizing three key points from the booklet and identifying at least one take-away that relates to their library program (1 hour).

The session will be face-to-face, presented in two parts.  Part 1 (3 hours) will include small group discussion, video testimonies and large group discussion focused on participants' perceptions of the school librarian, the elements of an effective library program, and the roles of the principal and the librarian as instructional leaders.  Part 2 on the same day (3 hours) will use a PowerPoint presentation and large group instruction to examine state standards for school libraries, as presented in "Linking for Learning: The Illinois School Library Media Program Guidelines," endorsed by the Illinois State Board of Education.  Participants will also be given specific instructions and a template for completing the Application component for Full AA credit if requested.

Instructors:  Georgeann Burch and Ruth Shasteen
