Projects & Activities Which Do Not Require Permits
What types of projects or activities do not require permits? You do not need permits for routine maintenance of your property. This includes:
Replacement of ovens, refrigerators, washers or dryers when there will be no new electrical or plumbing work
Interior and exterior painting - see note
Installation of or replacement of carpeting - see note
Replacement of windows with new windows of the same size - see note
Note: If your property is located in a floodplain please call the Building and Engineering Division office at 847-377-2600 to determine if there are additional requirements associated with your project.
These projects do not require a permit if the work will not temporarily or permanently block drainage and are not located in the floodplain or drainage easement:
Land disturbance of less than 1,000 square feet, without a change in drainage or fill within floodplain
Resurfacing existing paved surfaces such as sidewalks or driveways
You do not need a permit to conduct these activities on your property:
Two (2) or fewer garage sales per year
Parking one (1) commercial vehicle on residential property - the vehicle can not exceed eight (8) feet in width or 22 feet in length. All commercial vehicles with diesel engines are prohibited, regardless of size.
Private non-commercial events on sponsor's property (private parties, weddings, homeowners association or corporate picnics, etc.)
Temporary signs, such as real estate signs, located on residential property - temporary signs do need to conform to all setback requirements
